WHO WE ARE

A bit of background

Citizen Hub started in St Neots with a fairly straightforward idea: that if you give people a genuinely welcoming place where they can get support, build skills and connect with others, then better things happen for them economically and in their lives. We did not set out to build a national movement. We just opened a door and kept it open.

A few years on, the Hub has been featured on the BBC and The One Show, discussed inParliament, and is part of a growing network that is being watched by some of the most serious people working on community infrastructure and skills in this country. St Neots is still the original, and the work here still shapes what everything else looks like.

The four things we work on are health, social connection, skills, and employment and enterprise. We bring them together under one roof because that is how people's lives actually work. Someone who cannot pay their rent is not in the right headspace for a job interview. Someone who has not spoken to another person in a week is not going to walk into a room full of strangers for a training course. We try to meet people where they are.

THE ROLE

Why this role matters

Volunteers are not a category of resource we manage; they are the actual community we are trying to build. Without them, the hub does not function. With the right people, properly supported, it becomes something genuinely special. This role is the reason that happens, or does not.

Day to day, you will coordinate the rota, bring new volunteers through their induction, and be the first person they turn to when something is not right. You will also be the person who notices when someone is ready for more, and helps them get there. It is not a complicated brief, but it requires someone who is genuinely interested in people and takes real satisfaction from keeping things running well.

It is worth saying that this is not a back-office job. You will be in the hub, around the people we serve, and very much part of the day-to-day texture of the place. If that sounds appealing, then please do read on.

WHAT YOU WILL DO

Coordination and operations

  • Manage the volunteer rota, matching availability to the daily programme and making sure nothing falls through the gaps.
  • Take new volunteers from initial enquiry all the way through to trained and working confidently on their own.
  • Keep accurate records, follow and contribute to developing hub policies, and support compliance with safeguarding and legal requirements.

Supporting your team

  • Be the first point of contact when volunteers need support, a steer, or just someone to talk to.
  • Advocate for your team's development and flag issues early, escalating to the Hub Manager when needed.
  • Spot training opportunities and actively connect people with them.

Building relationships

  • Develop and maintain relationships with our primary collective partners and community partners.
  • Represent the hub with warmth and take the role seriously as an ambassador for what we are trying to do.

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

About you

We are not precious about qualifications. What we care about is whether you are genuinely good with people, reliable, and the sort of person who takes ownership of things rather than waiting to be asked. The skills stuff we can teach.

  • You are warm and approachable, and people feel comfortable coming to you with things.
  • You communicate clearly, in writing and in person, and you follow through on what you say you will do.
  • You can work independently and make sensible judgments without needing someone to look over your shoulder.
  • You are open to feedback and genuinely interested in learning, not just tolerating it.
  • You are reasonably comfortable with basic admin tools and willing to learn things like Canva, Trello or Monday.com as you go.

No formal qualifications are needed. All necessary training will be provided from day one.

WHAT YOU WILL GAIN

Your development

We take the development of our team seriously, partly because it is the right thing to do and partly because an organisation with ambitions like ours needs people who grow with it. Everyone who joins Citizen Hub gets a full training package from the start.

  • Ongoing leadership coaching (1-to-1 throughout)
  • Enhanced DBS (funded and supported)
  • IAG qualification (Information, Advice & Guidance
  • Mental Health First Aid (MHFA certified)
  • Career Ally training (via Stay Nimble)

Beyond the formal training, you will be working inside an organisation that is genuinely trying to figure out new ways of doing things. We are building hub infrastructure that does not really exist anywhere else yet, and the people involved in that at ground level tend to come away with a perspective on community, skills and social enterprise that you cannot get from a classroom. Whether that matters to you or not is up to you, but it is there.
